Hard To Swallow
An adaptation of Maureen Dunbar's book and TV. filmCatherine

Duration: 70 minutes (with judicious cuts, this can be used in drama festivals)
Cast: Can be performed by 5 (3f & 2 m) with doubling. Cast up to 44. Age Range: 13+.
(I recently saw a production with a large cast where a number of the cast were masked and provided a chorus style back up to the speaking parts... so on that basis the sky’s the limit!)

Showcased at the first Lloyds Bank National Theatre Challenge 1989. Hard To Swallow has become a popular play across the globe. It is based on the life and death of an anorexic girl, Catherine Dunbar, told mainly through the words of Catherine and her family. It charts Catherine's uneven battle with her illness and her families difficulties in coping with all that Anorexia means.

"This play reaches moments of almost unbearable intensity... naturalistic scenes flow seamlessly into sequences of highly stylised theatre... such potent theatre."
Vera Lustig - The Independent

"A model of its kind ... elegantly structured, highly informative, and imaginatively theatrical."
Ann McFerran - Stage and Television Today
